Troy has lived in Bloomington, Indiana for 30 years. He has been painting in oils for 14 years, and his experience shows in his ability to use generous amounts of color while still maintaining beautiful color harmonies.

He is also adept at depicting light, which he attributes not only to experience, but also to using a split primary palette composed of both warm and cool colors. His drawing skills are evident, as he paints loose and abstractly while still conveying each scene with authenticity and realism.

Troy believes painting outdoors is essential to making studio landscapes. "For an artist to really understand nature and how light affects color, they have to study and practice outside."

His commitment to learning to paint has unexpectedly resulted in success as a "plein air" painter. Although he never set out to become a plein air painter, he has garnered national attention for his outdoor painting skills.

After many years of teaching himself to paint, he is now passing his knowledge to others. He teaches workshops in both plein air and studio painting.
