Beyond Yin & Yang: Notan in Fiber Exhibit Sept. 5 - 17

Notan (a Japanese word meaning dark-light) focuses on the interaction between positive and negative space, a relationship embodied in the ancient symbolism of the Yang and the Yin. In composition, it recognizes the separate but equally important identity of both a shape and its background. Notan is an ancient principle of composition that can help meet creative challenges with fresh perspectives. The creative challenge is in translating the design or pattern of a work of art as seen in flat areas of dark and light values only. This is a concept that can lend itself in many dramatic renditions by using the medium of fiber within a commitment to designing and constructing art quilts. From the study of positive and negative space, through the concepts of tension, subordination, abstraction and distortion - all techniques that artists must use in translating the three dimensional world into the two dimensional space. This exhibit explores these many possibilities.

Exhibit open Tuesdays - Fridays, 10am to 2pm, and weekends from 1 - 4pm. Free (including Opening reception), public warmly invited. Artist donate 20% of sales to benefit The Barn.
